What Players to Play
If you think poker strategy is only about calculating those
odds and pre-flop strategy, that pot is gonna elude you
forever! Yes, strategy is very important to win a Texas
Holdem game. And strategy comes into play even before you
begin playing. Yes, brother. Your strategy starts with table
selection. You need to select who you're playing with.
Remember, most of your winnings will come from a few very
bad players.
If you're a fairly good
player, the better players won't get much from you; you
won't get much from those slightly inferior to you either.
You need to select a table with enough fish around! And
remember to select a mid-sized game. This allows you more
choice on who to sit by. Now, you need to figure out who're
the tight players, who're the aggressive ones, and the
suckers. Build up a player-profile for each in your head.
Online poker rooms provide you with options to take player
notes. You should avoid games with lots of early pre- and
post-flop raises, and games where one or two players
dominate. More important, if you consider yourself a
beginner or intermediate player keep clear of tables with
aggressive players.
Selecting the right seat
Okay, you've selected the
table. But that doesn't mean that all seats at that table
are winning seats. You now need to choose your neighbors!
Selecting the right table position is a very important
skill. The thumb rule here is to try to have loose,
aggressive players to your right. And keep the tight players
to your left. Because this way you can see a raise coming
before calling the first bet. You're always evaluating the
hand after the loose player makes the call. And you can
steal blinds from the tight players on your left. Also, you
can re-raise the bets of the very loose or wild players on
your right to try to finish off mediocre and drawing hands.
This will also give you a
positional advantage over a loose player to the right when
his bankroll is about to take a negative swing. Now, this is
something everyone knows but no one really takes into
consideration. You should try to play those who aren't as
good players as you. Finding them is easy. They tend to play
lower-limit Texas Holdem, and they flock to the newer online
poker rooms. Play them and sharpen your poker skills before
you take on the real sharks!
How To Place Bets
In Texas Holdem the players bet into a communal pot during
the course of a hand. The player with the best hand at the
end of the betting wins the pot.
There are four choices of
action available to a player during a betting round: Check:
To pass your turn, but do not forfeit interest in the pot.
Bet or Raise: To put in the first bet in a round. It's a
non-zero bet greater than preceding bets. All successive
players must match or exceed this bet or raise. Otherwise
they forfeit all interest in the pot. Call: To matching a
bet amount.
It maintains a player's
interest in the pot. Fold: To give up your hand and forfeit
the pot in response to another player's bet. In Texas Holdem
betting proceeds in a circle until each player has either
called all bets or folded. Now, you are supposed to bet when
you've a good hand, and fold when you don't have a good
hand. At least, it is so in theory. But things are never so
simple. Players try to deceive their opponents into thinking
they have bad hands when they have good hands or vice versa.
And therein lies the great charm of poker. But if you are a
novice, try to stay between the straight lines. But be on
the lookout for opportunities where you can bet where you
otherwise wouldn't have.
